European Commissioner Maria Gabriel launched a project at the Technical University of Plovdiv worth 12 million leva. European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Maria Gabriel opened the restored part of the building of the III block of the Technical University - Plovdiv branch. The building is a cultural monument and was formerly known as the French Girls' College. The renovation cost 2.2 million leva, and the equipment of the center is valued at 9.8 million leva. This was announced by the press center of the higher education institution. The restoration of the building is the first stage of the construction of the Competence Center "Mechatronic, Eco- and Energy-Efficient Systems and Technologies", funded under the Operational Programme "Science and Education for Intelligent Growth." In her welcome address, European Commissioner Maria Gabriel emphasized partnership, talent, and applicability, which, in her words, are the foundations for the development of this scientific project. "More than ever, Europe, which is a leader in science, needs to become a leader in innovation as well. Innovation must find its application in industry," Gabriel stressed. Partners in the project include the Technical Universities in Sofia, Gabrovo, and Varna, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the Institute of Robotics and the Institute of Electronics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, as well as the Central Laboratory for Applied Physics of the Academy.
